"On the blue wings - Dinamo"; Author: Sasa Pavkovic
It has been awhile since modern football clubs have outgrown the
framework of sports teams that compete on the pitch in order to
achieve a better result. Today's leaders of European football
leagues are perfectly organized machinery in produceing fun
and success which consequently results in large amount of money
invested and complete advertising support. Therefore, clubs
offer to fans, admirers and collectors a wide range of products and
souvenirs related to their history, the glory days and toy
connected to the famous football names which throw fans into a
frenzy. These European traditions have become part of everyday life
and our renowned sports clubs, including football club "Dinamo",
the most popular Croatian team which is committed to constantly
being in active connection with a large group of fans,
admirers and friends.
As a pivotal part of this marketing, a new art project by
prominent painter and printmaker Mill Boras emerges, which also
testifies to the almost mythical position of "Dinamo" in our, not
just sports history. Rich graphics folder consisted of twenty
sheets of various motifs is an interesting story about the club,
which in our social memory has a special place. The images show the
magic of football games through lifelike scenes , dominated
by "Dinamo" players, but there are other elements of the story of
this great club including the whole philosophy of football,
offence, a literal battle for the dignity of the club, for
its symbols and supporters. In the scenes from the pitch where
"Dinamo" players clash with those from other teams, the blue
guys are always one step ahead, quicker on the ball and jump
higher, where this realistic scene is symbolically enriched with a
detail of the wings which shows how these blue cladded players have
always had some special motivation for playing and winning.
Eleven sheets "from the pitch" show the same number of positions
in which a team player could be found, each presenting in its own
way a small battle in which "Dinamo" players come out as winners.
The rest, however, show different themes, such as historically
significant game in 1990. with a Belgrade's Red Star, which is seen
in the memory of Croatian nation as practically the
definitive beginning of a struggle that has progressed to the
Homeland War, making these scenes even more deserving. In the
folder there are graphics inspired by the legendary club's
symbol, the letter "d", which is still widely recognizable, as well
as graphically interesting and open for visual play. Some
sheets have turned to abstract and symbolic expressions
("Dominance", "Impression"), which allows the artist to achieve the
visual dynamics of the whole project, which is a playful,
kaleidoscopic way to conclude a comprehensive story about the club,
with the history which is much more than the sum of statistical
triumphs and awards, with games which carried much more
significance to its supporters than just another game of
football.
All fo this shows that Boras' folder "On the blue wings" is more
than just another graphic project, a unique artistic contribution
to the further promotion of the club which had been till recently
brushing shoulders with the giants of European football. These maps
should also prove that it is still has a valid place among those
legendary football teams which prove their value through scores,
but also have a well rounded identity.
